JOURNEYS TO OMAN

In December 2008 and in February 2009 I travelled to the deserts of Oman: first with a team of French scientists lead by Stephane Douady, then with my colleague JG Thirlwell.

On both trips, the aim was to capture our sounds of the so-called "Singing Sands" or "Booming Dunes".

These sound files can give an impression of what the dunes sound like.

Recorded in December 2008.

The "Big Star" dune. This is an immense dune located in the north of Oman, very close to the borders of the United Arab Emirates.
I recorded it with my accelerometer, burying it in the sand. But the sound you can hear here was evoked when I was actually sliding down the dune - like on the picture below, where you see me sliding and pushing sand.
(Proper loudspeakers are necessary for listening to these files. The frequencies are too deep to be heard on computer speakers. If you don't have speakers then try with headphones)

This is a recording of a dune near Al Ashkharah, a small fisher town by the Arabian Sea in the south of Oman. Here I managed to record a "spontaneous boom", a sound that actually happened without me sliding or pushing. That day, the wind was very strong and I had buried my accelerometer underneath the sand. What you can hear here (resembling white noise) is the sound of millions of loose sand grains that are moving across the hard sandy surface, then after a couple of seconds the spontaneous boom can be heard.

December 2008This is it how it sounds when you move down the dune while pushing and kicking as much sand as possible. I recorded this with an acoustical microphone strapped around my body. I reallized that the dune was like an instrument that I could play.

Call to prayer. Muttrah, Oman at 5 am.

Before we left Oman in December we gave all our food, pots and pans to these people. In return they offered us coffee, sweets and a special kind of meat. Al Ashkharah, Oman

A border police from the UAE came by to check what we were doing. I invited him to listen to the sound of the Big Star Dune.
