HYPOGEUM

Hypogeum is a sound journey through Copenhagen’s colossal sewer system: a sensuous, captivating and observant mapping of an underworld known only to very few.

The work is composed of recordings from the city’s underground stormwater tunnels, sewer pipes, pumping stations, and majestic water reservoirs with cistern-like chambers and vertical colonnades.

The work not only generates awareness of the sewer system and the infrastructure beneath our feet, but also serves as a sonic testimony to the history of hygiene as well as to the age of climate change: the ongoing expansion of the city’s stormwater basins - built to prevent wastewater flooding when the skies open - lends its subterranean acoustics to the sound work.
